Contents

The world has to rapidly decarbonise to prevent the worst effects of climate change and all sectors need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, including academia, research and higher education. Whether you are a researcher, staff, or a student we all have an exciting and important role to play in reducing emissions from the academic sector. This course helps participants to unlock the skills to effect change in their team, institution, or sector.

Participants will:

  • Appreciate the carbon emissions in the academic / higher education / research sector, and develop a sense of the scale of carbon emissions from different activities.

  • Be inspired by examples of sustainability action big and small.

  • Unlock your own potential to effect change in your team, institution, or sector.

  • Learn about frameworks and platforms that support sustainability efforts in your setting.

  • Be able to draw from issues of climate justice and co-benefits to climate action to help make the case for action in your setting.

  • Have the tools for successful communication, collaboration, and develop insights to encourage behaviour change.

Please note the course consists of several sessions, and you should be able to attend all of them.

Study commitment

By participating in the course you are committing to:

  • Participating in the 4 online group sessions.

  • Approximately 1-2 hours of guided preparatory work before each group session.

  • Developing your own sustainability action plan that you can implement in your place of work or study.

Other relevant information

Participants will have the opportunity to be certified by the Carbon Literacy Project.

NOTE: Conditions for participating in online courses

Intervals courses are small, interactive group sessions in which confidential issues are often raised. During the Zoom sessions you must have your camera on, and a microphone ready to participate in the group activities. You should be in a quiet place with a good internet connection. If you are not alone in the room you must wear headphones. If you are unable to meet these conditions you will be asked to leave the course.
